Finals Day 2008
KNNL finals day began with an exciting close fought match between Hazlehead and East Kilbride. The final score was 44 all and extra time saw an equally close fought game going down to the final few passes, with a win for Hazlehead, 55-53! Player of the match was Stephanie Murphy, East Kilbrides Goal Attack/ Shooter.
The second game of the day was the local derby and saw an Edinburgh Uni, short of players due to the Easter University Holidays, side take on Edinburgh Onyx. With only 6 players the first quarter was a sign of a possible walk in the park match for Onyx, who lead 20-4 after 15 mins. But at half time a change to the Uni side, saw Claire Brownie take on the Goal Attack postion and initiate a turn around for the uni side. The third was even, both teams scoring 9 goals. Player of the match went to Claire Brownie for starting the turn around, even if the defecit could be no where near caught. The final score was Onyx 62, Edinburgh Uni 27.
The final was fought between the two Glasgow teams, Scotstoun and Bellahoustoun. The first quarter showed signs of being a close game finishing 11 all, but it was Scotstoun who began to pull away due to turnovers by the eventual player of the league, June McNeill and fluid through court play from player of the match, Gail Higgins. The final score was 56-47 to Scotstoun.
This year has given us closer and more exciting games than the previous years. With changes being made to the rules next year we are hoping to continually improve the league to meet our aims and continue to provide top level netball for Scotlands top players.
Thanks to everyone who has volunteered over the league play days, especially table officials and umpires! A huge thank you goes to Ann-Marie Peacock who organised all of the umpires throughout the league.
